Benefits of the TRX Pistol Squats

A fitness professional and stretch therapist at Lifetime Athletic Fitness, Carisa Gaylardo enhanced her qualifications by acquiring professional certifications in kickboxing and Total Resistance Exercises (TRX) functional training.

TRX training is recognized for its ability to improve stability in the midsection of the body. Contrary to weight training, TRX enhances body strength and power without any equipment other than a suspension strap. While the exercises generally improve the core muscles (in the abdomen region), some special TRX techniques can engage the lower body muscles (pelvic, thigh, and leg muscles). A perfect example is TRX pistol squats.

To perform the TRX pistol squats, participants grip the suspension strap with each hand and keep stepping back until the straps are fully extended (all slacks removed). They further lift and develop the right leg while flexing the left thigh to lower their body into a deep squat. This should be done with the back (spine) maintained straight conformation. They push the body into a standing position with just the left heel. The upper extremity should provide no support in this endeavor.

Pistol squats engage the lower body muscles, particularly the glutes, quadriceps, hip flexors, and hamstrings. Benefits include improved leg strength, improved balance and stability, increased strength, and reduced fall risk.
